1. The ambulance service in Hong Kong needs a way to promote first aid educationally in a fun way. I have chosen to create a first aid website created by the government. The current first aid webpage is a single typed page in the fire services website, and does not appeal to young people, who the contents of the page are aimed at. The page is hard to get to on the website, and I was rewarded when I looked for it with a long column of uninteresting, picture-less text. My second media will be a leaflet to teach people about first aid.
I could create the website to be efficient and interesting to visit, not to mention more informative. I want to make this new website a source of information for young people researching first aid, and to promote first aid awareness. The new website will include a sidebar, shortcuts and clear information to make the website clear and easy to use. I will have to learn how to make search boxes to sort out information. The users of the website will have to know how to surf the website to make searches.
I decided to make a website because most people use the internet as an information resource, and so a website is the most convenient way of getting information to them. Other non-ICT ways of raising first-aid awareness, such as posters or pocket-sized guides, are impractical because the amount of young people who read or see them will not be that large.
My client will be Eric, an Ambulance Officer who will specify the information put on the website.
2. For the same purpose as idea 1, I can create an interactive computer game about first aid. The government has not yet designed a first aid game to target young people. Computer games can attract most young people because playing games are a large part of what they do online. The second media will be an online video ad advertising the game. I will put it on the sidebars of sites young people usually go on. I will have to learn how to make a computer game and a professional looking video and putting it online.
When users play, the computer game will ask questions and players have to select the answers. A certain amount of right answers means the player can then progress to the second level etc. The video ad shows the benefits of using the new website and gives the url and a link. Users will have to have a basic knowledge of how to play a computer game- which is not a problem as the instructions will explain it.
Computer games are more interesting to young people than, say, leaflets or posters. It also helps them be more attentive when absorbing the information. Computer games are also easily accessible.
My client will be the same person as Idea 1.
3. Octopus Company has not many products sold online, so I could create an online catalog so people can buy Octopus products online. This targets the general public, but mostly adults. After a product are selected, the product is delivered to the given address and money is paid on the doorstep. I will have to learn how to make a catalog online and database the addresses. The catalog will have to be a website. I can make a poster advertising the catalog for my second media. I will also have to learn to make a secure website so the customers and enter names and addresses.
A catalog is a convenient way of shopping that can also raise the popularity of the products it sells. More customers may be able to buy Octopus products if I make an online catalog. Customers will have to know how to use a catalog and search up items.
Other solutions such as catalogs which come in the post, waste paper and are less convenient, because they might involve phone calls and such. The website may have to be made legal with a license, which may be hard to get.
My client will be Gladys, a Project Manager in Octopus.
I am choosing Idea 1, because it is the one that interests me the most and seems not too difficult to research and make. A catalog and computer game may be too time-consuming and hard to make.
